Professor Harpinder Sandhu is an ecological economist based at the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability and is also the Director of an Agribusiness and AgTech Research Hub at Federation University Australia. He is a transdisciplinary researcher who examines the interactions between society and the environment for inclusive and equitable development. His current research focus is on integrating social, human and natural capital to transform agriculture and food systems towards sustainability. He obtained a PhD in Agroecology and Resource Economics from Lincoln University, New Zealand. He has over two decades of professional experience in agriculture and rural development, leading research initiatives in Australia and globally in partnership with farmers, farming organisations, the agribusiness industry, the FAO, the World Bank, UNEP, and non-profit organisations. Professor Sandhu has collaborated with the UNEP to develop the report on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Agriculture and Food program. At the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), he has served as the lead author of two reports: the Pollination Report and the Asia-Pacific Regional Assessment. The collective work of the UN IPBES was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020, highlighting the vital link between nature and sustainable development. He has published two books and delivered over 150 research papers and technical presentations at national and international conferences and meetings in more than 30 countries. He is also an academic editor at the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability, PeerJ, Land and Sustainability, and PLOS Sustainability & Transformation journals.
